Tangent Θ = opposite / adjacent

AB = short leg = opposite = 12
AC = long leg = adjacent = 5
BC = hypotenuse = 13

tangent Θ = 12/5 ⇒⇒⇒ this is in ratio form
tanΘ = 2.4   ⇒⇒⇒ this is in decimal form

Stolb23 [73]

Answer:

Editor’s Note (7/29/16): An earlier version of this story contained several biographical inaccuracies and did not give Jim Papadopoulos a chance to respond to the comment about his ability to finish things. Michael Papadopoulos moved his family to the United States more than a decade before taking a job at Oregon, not in 1967. Jim Papadopoulos spent a whole academic year at Oregon before starting at MIT. He did not write to bike companies asking for work until the 1990s. His time at the US Geological Survey was part of an internship, not a full-time job. The e-mail list he moderated was also founded by him, and is called Hardcore Bicycle Science. He has actually published three first-author papers, but just one related to bicycle science. He was also not given a chance to respond to a comment about his ability to finish things.

Seven bikes lean against the wall of Jim Papadopoulos's basement in Boston, Massachusetts. Their paint is scratched, their tyres flat. The handmade frame that he got as a wedding present is coated in fine dust. “I got rid of most of my research bikes when I moved,” he says. The bicycles that he kept are those that mean something to him. “These are the ones I rode.”

Papadopoulos, who is 62, has spent much of his life fascinated by bikes, often to the exclusion of everything else. He competed in amateur races while a teenager and at university, but his obsession ran deeper. He could never ride a bike without pondering the mathematical mysteries that it contained. Chief among them: What unseen forces allow a rider to balance while pedalling? Why must one initially steer right in order to lean and turn left? And how does a bike stabilize itself when propelled without a rider?

Answer:

The decision rule is

  Reject the null hypothesis

The test statistics is t = -2.699

Step-by-step explanation:

From the question we are told that

   The first sample size is  n_1 = 15

   The mean at first deployment is  \= x _1 =  \$ 150 000

   The standard deviation is  s_1  = \$ 40000

    The second sample size is n_2 = 25

    The mean at second deployment is  \= x_2 = \$ 180000

    The standard deviation is  s_2 = \$ 30 000

The null hypothesis is  H_o : \mu_1 = \mu_2

The alternative hypothesis is  H_a : \mu_1 \ne  \mu_2

   The level of significance is  \alpha = 0.05

Generally the degree of freedom is mathematically represented as

      df =n_1 + n_2 -2

=>   df =40 -2

=>   df =38

Generally the pooled variance is mathematically represented as

      s_p^2  =  \frac{x(n_1 -1) s_1^2 + (n_2 - 1)s_2^2}{df}

=>   s_p^2  =  \frac{(15 -1) 40000^2 + (25 - 1)30000^2}{38}

=>   s_p^2  = 1.1579 * 10^{9}

Generally the test statistics is mathematically represented as

      t = \frac{ \= x_1 - \= x_2 }{\sqrt{s_p [\frac{1}{n_1} + \frac{1}{n_2} ]} }

=>   t = \frac{ 150000 - 180000 }{\sqrt{1.11579 *10^{9} [\frac{1}{15} + \frac{1}{25} ]} }

=>   t = -2.699

Generally from the  t distribution table the probability corresponding to the t statistics value to the left is

     t_{-2.699 , 38} = 0.00516046

Generally the p -value is mathematically represented as

     p-value = 2*  t_{-2.699, 38}

=>  p-value = 2*  0.00516046

=>  p-value = 0.01032

From the obtained value we see that the  p-value < \alpha  hence

   The decision rule is

  Reject the null hypothesis

Fed [463]

Answer:

a) 15.58

b) 39.06

Step-by-step explanation:

MENSA is organization whose member have IQs in the top 2% of the population. IQs are normally distributed with mean 100, and the minimum IQ score required for admission to MENSA is 132.

From standard normal table z value for top 2% =2.054

132 = 100+2.054×σ

σ=(132-100)/2.054=15.58

(b) Cholesterol levels for women aged 20 to 34 follow an approximately normal distribution with mean 185 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl). Women with cholesterol levels above 220 mg/dl are considered to have high cholesterol and about 18.5% of women fall into this category.

From standard normal table z value for top 18.5% =0.896

220 = 185+0.896×σ

σ=(220-185)/0.896 =39.06
