The price of tickets for the dance was 1 ticket for $5 (for individuals) or 2 tickets for $8 (for couples). She looked inside th

e cash box and found $200 and ticket stubs for the 47 students in attendance. Does the dollar belong inside the cash box or not? Explain your reasoning.

The $1 belongs in the box.

<h3>What are the equations that represent the question assuming the $1 does not belong in the box?</h3>

s + c = 47 equation 1

5s + 4c = 200 equation 2

<h3>How many singles and couples bought the ticket assuming that the $1 does not belong in the box?</h3>

Multiply equation 1 by 5

5s + 5c = 235

Subtract equation 2 from equation 3

c = 35

Subtract 35 from 47

c = 47 - 35 = 12

35 couples tickets and 12 individual tickets were sold. This is not possible since the couples tickets were sold in 2.

<h3>What are the linear equations that represent the question if the 1 dollar belonged in the box?
</h3>

s + c = 47 equation 1

5s + 4c = 201 equation 2

<h3>How many couples  tickets were sold?</h3>

Multiply equation 1 by 5

5s + 5c = 235

Subtract equation 2 from equation 3

c = 34

34 is divisible by 2 so the $1 belongs in the box.

Here is the complete question:
Nola was selling tickets at the high school dance. At the end of the evening, she picked up the cash box and noticed a dollar lying on the floor next to it. She said,

I wonder whether the dollar belongs inside the cash box or not.

A student is given that point P(a, b) lies on the terminal ray of angle Theta, which is between StartFraction 3 pi Over 2 EndFra
Harman [31]

Answer:

<em>A.</em>

<em>The student made an error in step 3 because a is positive in Quadrant IV; therefore, </em>

<em />cos\theta = \frac{a\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}{a^2 + b^2}

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

P\ (a,b)

r = \± \sqrt{(a)^2 + (b)^2}

cos\theta = \frac{-a}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}} = -\frac{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}{a^2 + b^2}

Required

Where and which error did the student make

Given that the angle is in the 4th quadrant;

The value of r is positive, a is positive but b is negative;

Hence;

r = \sqrt{(a)^2 + (b)^2}

Since a belongs to the x axis and b belongs to the y axis;

cos\theta is calculated as thus

cos\theta = \frac{a}{r}

Substitute r = \sqrt{(a)^2 + (b)^2}

cos\theta = \frac{a}{\sqrt{(a)^2 + (b)^2}}

cos\theta = \frac{a}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}

Rationalize the denominator

cos\theta = \frac{a}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}} * \frac{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}

cos\theta = \frac{a\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}}{a^2 + b^2}

So, from the list of given options;

<em>The student's mistake is that a is positive in quadrant iv and his error is in step 3</em>
