Why is the derivative of a constant zero

A constant function is exactly that - constant - meaning it exhibits no change whatsoever with respect to any change in its input. If f(x) = 1, then it doesn't matter what value of x I give you, the value of f(x) will always be nothing other than 1.

That the derivative of such a function is zero follows immediately from the definition of the derivative. If c\in\Bbb R and f(x) = c, then

f'(x) = \displaystyle \lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}h = \lim_{h\to0} \frac{1 - 1}h = \lim_{h\to0}\frac0h = 0

How many different three-letter initials with none of the letters repeated can people have?
viva [34]
This is a probablity question

there are 3 slots, 26 letters of the alphabet

so in the first slot, we have 26 possible letters
2nd slot, we have 25 possible letters (we used one for the first slot)
3rd slot, we have 24 possible letters, (we used 2 for first and 2nd slot)

so in total, we have 26*25*24 or 15600 different 3 letter initials with no repeated letters

Joe has eaten 2/5 of a pizza. James has eaten 1/7. How many times more pizza has Joe eaten than James?
11Alexandr11 [23.1K]
First let's make the denominators of the fractions equal.
To do this, we have to find a number which both 5 and 7 divide into.
The smallest number that does this is 35.

2  --> Multiply the numerator by 7
--
5  --> Multiply the denominator by 7 to get 35

= 14/35

1 --> Multiply the numerator by 5
--
7 --> Multiply the denominator by 5 to get 35

= 5/35

Joe has eaten 14/35 and James has eaten 5/35.
14 / 5 = 2.8

<u>Joe has eaten 2.8 (or 2 4/5) times more pizza than James.</u>
