Susie enjoys spending her afternoons kayaking. One afternoon she was kayaking on a river 3 miles upstream, and 3 miles downstrea

m in a total of 4 hours. In still water, Susie can Kayak at an average speed of 2 miles per hour. Based on this information, what a reasonable estimation of the current measured in miles per hour.

Using the relation between velocity, distance and time, it is found that a reasonable estimation of the current is of 1 mph.

<h3>What is the relation between velocity, distance and time?</h3>

Velocity is <u>distance divided by time</u>, hence:

v = \frac{d}{t}

Upstream, against the current, he traveled 3 miles in t hours, hence the equation is:

2 - c = \frac{3}{t}

c = 2 - \frac{3}{t}

Downstream, with the current, he traveled 3 miles in 4 - t hours, hence the equation is:

2 + c = \frac{3}{4 - t}

Hence:

c = \frac{3}{4 - t} - 2

Then, taking the two equal equations:

2 - \frac{3}{t} = \frac{3}{4 - t} - 2

\frac{3}{4 - t} + \frac{3}{t} = 4

\frac{3t + 12 - 3t}{t(4 - t)} = 4

12 = -4t² + 16t

4t² - 16t + 12 = 0

t² - 4t + 3 = 0

(t - 3)(t - 1) = 0.

The current is positive, hence:

c = 2 - \frac{3}{3}

c = 2 - 1

c = 1 mph.

The graph shows two polygons ABCD and A′B′C′D′.
stellarik [79]

Answer:

Translate ABCD down 1, then reflect it over the y-axis

and

Reflect ABCD over the y-axis, then translate down 1

Step-by-step explanation:

First of all, the two steps are the same, just in a different order

Second, if you look at the instructions you can see what would happen to the quadrilateral. Reflecting over the y-axis would make the shape flip horizontally (left to right), as shown in the image. This means the points on the left move to the right, and the points on the right move to the left. Top and bottom points stay the same. And the "translation" just means to slide. In both the answers, it says "translate 1 unit down", which just means "move 1 unit down", which is exactly what happens in the image

What is the area of a parallelogram if the coordinates of its vertices are (0, -2), (3,2), (8,2), and (5, -2)?
Talja [164]

Answer: 20 sq. units .

Step-by-step explanation:

Let A(0, -2), B(3,2), C(8,2), and D(5, -2) are the points for the parallelogram.

First we plot these points on coordinate plane, we get parallelogram ABCD.

By comparing the y-coordinate of B and C with A and D , we get

height = 2+2 = 4 units

Also by comparing the x coordinates of A and D, we get base = 5-0= 5 units

Area of parallelogram = Base x height

= 5 x 4 = 20 sq. units

Hence, the area of a parallelogram ABCD is 20 sq. units .
