A mail carrier can deliver mail to 36 houses in 30 minutes. Mark wants to determine how many houses the carrier can deliver mail

to in 7.5 minutes at this rate. He thinks that to find the answer, he should do the following.
1. First divide 36 houses by 30 minutes to find a unit rate of 1.2 houses per minute.
2. Then multiply 1.2 houses per minute by 7.5 minutes to get 9 houses.

Mark's method is correct, because even though it is impossible to deliver mail to 1.2 houses in minute, it represents the unit rate of houses per minute .

Is Mark's method correct?

The first step is to determine the unit rate of houses per minute. This can be done by dividing 36 houses by 30 minutes.

36/30 = 1.2 houses per minute

The second step is to multiply 1.2 by 7.5: 1.2 x 7.5 = 9 houses

Ordered pair representing the price per pound of apples, x, and potatoes, y is (2.5, 1.1).

Step-by-step explanation:

Let us assume that the cost of per pound of apples = $ x

Assume that the cost of per pound of potatoes = $ y

Now, according to question:

The cost of 8 pounds of apples and 5 pounds of potatoes = $25.50

⇒ Cost of 8 pounds of Apple + Cost of 5 pounds of potatoes = $25.50

⇒ 8 x (Cost of 1 pound apple) + 5 x ( cost of 1 pound potato ) = $25.50

⇒ 8 x + 5 y = $25.50 .... (1)

⇒ 5 y = 25.5 - 8 x

Similarly,

The cost of 3 pounds of apples and 10 pounds of potatoes = $18.50

⇒ 3 x + 10 y = $18.50 .... (2)

or, 1.5 x +5 y = $ 9.25 ( dividing the equation by 2)

⇒ 5 y = 9.25 - 1.5 x

Now, comparing both equations,we get:

25.5 - 8 x = 9.25 - 1.5 x

⇒ 25.5 - 9.25 = 8 x - 1.5 x

⇒ 16.25 = 6.5 x

⇒ x = 2.5

Putting this value of x in 5 y = 9.25 - 1.5 x, we get:

5 y = 9.25 - 1.5 (2.5)

⇒ 5 y = 5.5

⇒ y = 1.1

So, the cost of 1 pound of apples = $2.5

The cost pf 1 pound of potatoes = $1.1

The ordered pair (x,y) is given as : (x,y) = (2.5,1.1)

The rectangle has a length of 4x+3 and a width of 3x. Show your work.
Alik [6]

Answer:

 A. P = 14x+6

 B. A = 12x^2 +9x

 C. P = 118; A = 840

Step-by-step explanation:

A. The perimeter is twice the sum of length and width:

 P = 2(L +W) = 2((4x+3) +(3x)) = 2(7x +3)

 P = 14x +6 . . . . the perimeter of the rectangle

__

B. The area is the product of length and width:

 A = LW = (4x +3)(3x)

 A = 12x^2 +9x . . . . . the area of the rectangle

__

C. When x = 8, these values are ...

 P = 14·8 +6 = 118 . . . . . perimeter in units

 A = 12·8^2 +9·8 = 768 +72 = 840 . . . . . area in square units
