James has 3 pairs of running shoes for every 4 pairs of basketball shoes. If he has 12 pairs of basketball shoes, how many pairs
GaryK [48]
If James has 12 pairs of basketball shoes, then the ratio would be 3:4 which would stop at 3:12. Then the individual ratios would be 3:4, 6:8, and 9:12

So James has 9 pairs of running shoes

Write the expression in word form 12÷6×2
finlep [7]

Answer:

Twelve divide by six times two.

4

Step-by-step explanation:

To solve this problem, first you have to use the order of operations stands for parenthesis, exponents, multiply, divide, add, and subtract from left to right.

First, multiply & divide numbers from left to right.

\displaystyle 12\div6\times2

\displaystyle 12\div6=2

\displaystyle 2\times2=4

Therefore, the correct answer is twelve divide by six times two or 4.

Enter the explicit rule for the sequence
Softa [21]
Let's take a look at the first few numbers in the sequence based on the given rule:

a_{1}=6\\ a_{2}= \frac{1}{4}(6)\\ a_3= \frac{1}{4}\big( \frac{1}{4}\big)6= \big(\frac{1}{4}\big)^2(6)\\ a_{4}= \frac{1}{4} \big(\frac{1}{4}\big)^26= \big(\frac{1}{4}\big)^3(6)

Inspecting this pattern it seems like the power \frac{1}{4} is being raised to is always one less than the number of the sequence, so if we were on the nth number in the sequence, that part of the expression would be \big(\frac{1}{4} \big)^{n-1}. We also know that we'll be multiplying whatever we get from that by 6, so we can write the full explicit rule for our sequence as

a_n=6\big( \frac{1}{4} \big)^{n-1}

Where a_n is the nth number in our sequence.
