Crooks is bookish and likes to keep his room neat, however, his emotions have been so beaten down by loneliness and prejudicial treatment that he is now suspicious of any kindness he receives.

Lennie's quick interaction with Crooks reveals the character which shows the complexity of racial prejudice inside the northern California ranch lifestyles.

Crooks is the only black man at the ranch and experiences a significant amount of racism and discrimination.

Crooks is a lively, black strong-hand, who takes his name from his crooked back. Like most of the characters in the tale, he admits that he's extremely lonely. When Lennie visits him in his room, his response well-known shows this fact.
