It showed that the US government believed that European powers should no longer colonize the Americas, or involve the sovereignty of the United States, Mexico and other countries in the Americas. The United States remained neutral with regard to disputes between European countries, or between countries and their American colonies. This was a turning point in US foreign affairs until the outbreak of World War I.

The purpose and influence of the Monroe Doctrine continued for more than a century, with only minor changes. Its main purpose was to protect the newly independent nations of Latin America from European intervention and to prevent the new world from becoming a battlefield for the old world powers, thus enabling the United States to exert its influence without interference.
