The Monroe Doctrine was a US foreign policy on the control of the American continent. This was a turning point in US foreign affairs until the outbreak of World War I.

The purpose and influence of the Monroe Doctrine continued for more than a century, with only minor changes. Its main purpose was to protect the newly independent nations of Latin America from European intervention and to prevent the new world from becoming a battlefield for the old world powers, thus enabling the United States to exert its influence without interference.
