A muckraker was a reporter who wrote about corruption and crime in industry and government.

A group of writers, reporters, and critics who uncovered corporate malfeasance and political corruption within the first decade of the 20th century. They have been reporters (writers for newspapers and magazines) who exposed the dust, corruption, and ills of yankee society. He uncovered manufacturing unit conditions. The main aim of the Muckrakers was to raise cognizance of social injustices, inequality, corruption and the abuse of political energy as a way to bring about reform.

Theodore Roosevelt coined the term "muckraker" during a speech in 1906. He as compared investigative reporters to the slender-minded discern in John Bunyan's 17th-century non secular myth, "The Pilgrim's development": the "man that would look no manner however downwards, with a muckrake in his hand."
