Structuralism was a movement started in Germany by William Wundt. Structuralism tried to break down the adult mind into its simplest quantifiable components in order to better understand how these components fit together to generate more complex forms. The adult mind was defined as the sum of all experiences from birth to the present.

Introspection was the main instrument of structuralist psychology (a careful set of observations made under controlled conditions by trained observers using a stringently defined descriptive vocabulary).
