Habitat destruction is the leading cause for declining populations of species on our planet. Due to human development, industry,

and forestry, humans are destroying the habitat of many species at an alarming rate. Consider the bald eagle. The bald eagle population was threatened in the late 60s and early 70s. Thanks to an aggressive bald eagle protection program, bald eagle numbers in the wild have soared as seen in the population graph above. The bald eagle's population very nearly reached extinction. Why did the bald eagle's declining population make it more vulnerable to extinction? A) As populations decline, reproduction stops B) As populations decline, less resources are available C) As populations decline, there is less genetic diversity D) As populations decline, birds migrate farther away from other populations

The answer is C) As populations decline, there is less genetic diversity. This is called the 'founder effect'. With limited numbers of individuals in a population, it is more likely that highly-related individuals will mate. This will result in recessive and deleterious genes being manifested in the phenotype. Consider that higher organisms are diploid: they contain two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Within each chromosome, some alleles will be dominant while others will be recessive, i.e., for the recessive alleles to be manifested in the phenotype, both have to be recessive, whereas for the dominant allele, only one of the alleles has to be dominant for the allele to manifest in the phenotype. With lower genetic diversity, a higher proportion of individuals will have chromosomes containing both recessive alleles, which may manifest as lowered fitness and genetic disorders.

C) As populations decline, there is less genetic diversity

As populations decline, there is less genetic diversity The bald eagle's population reached alarmingly low numbers due to habitat loss and with low populations, there is not as much genetic variability. With fewer variations, a species survival is difficult to overcome without conservation efforts.

Meiosis gizmos answer key
Sergio [31]

The Meiosis Gizmo is an intuitive movement, which helps understudies through the steps of meiosis offspring utilizing crossovers and meiosis.

Explanation:

It explains how sex cells division that produces reproductive cells in sexually reproducing organisms produced by the process of meiosis. Compare meiosis in male and female germ cells, and use hybrids to expand the number of conceivable gamete genotypes.

Utilizing meiosis and crossovers, create "designer" fruit fly offspring with wanted attribute mixes. During meiosis, a few chromosomes swap portions of themselves, making new blends of qualities and expanding the hereditary decent variety of the sex cells.

Is everyone’s heart biologically the same
WINSTONCH [101]
Yes and no. Everyone's heart works the same way, is made of the same type of tissue and is located in the same part of the body. However, there are people with diseases who have hearts that are in worse condition and may look different. For example, people with coronary artery disease experience plaque build up in their coronary arteries, which causes a reduction of blood flow to the heart, and in order to treat this they may get a bypass surgery in which another blood vessel from somewhere else in the body, would be used to bypass the blocked blood vessel. In this case the anatomy of that person's heart would be slightly different.

How do scientists ensure that autoclaved materials were actually sterilized? View Available Hint(s)
Pie

Answer:

They may place a sterility indicator with special dye to detect the growth of endospores.

Explanation:

A sterility indicator should be placed inside and in the center of the item that will be autoclaved, if the indicator changes colors that means that the endospores were not killed with the sterilization process and the bacteria survived the high temperatures of the autoclave.
