How peopleresponded on Seperate amenities act

History

People responded to the Separate amenities act by launching defiance campaigns, where volunteers would use equipment that was only meant for use by white people while courting arrest. Some white individuals wouldn't mind if people entered areas that were designated for them in order to demonstrate that not all white people agreed with the racist rules.

The Separate Amenities Act, Act No. 49 of 1953, was a component of South Africa's apartheid system of racial segregation. The Act made racial segregation in public places, transportation, and services permissible. The Act only applied to public streets and roads.

The Separate Amenities Act, Section 3b declared that separate facilities for different races did not have to be equal, while Section 3a made it legal to fully bar individuals based on their race from using public places, vehicles, or services. In reality, whites were given priority access to the best amenities, while people of other races received inferior ones.
