feature of Magnetic quantum numbers specifies the orientation in space of an orbital of a given energy and shape.

Who discovered the magnetic quantum number ?

Magnetic quantum number was proposed by Lande in order to explain the Zeeman and stark effect . The splitting of spectral lines in strong magnetic field is called Zeeman effect and splitting in strong electric field is called Stark effect.

The formula of magnetic quantum numbers is ( 2l+1) . The total number of orbitals in a given subshell is a function of the "l" value of that orbital. It specifies the orientation in space of an orbital of a given energy and shape.
