The two major strategies used by Sargon to conquer the Sumerian city-states includes the following

 • military strategies
 • cultural assimilation

Sargon's Military Strategy

Sargon assembled a large army which he taught to fight in tight formations. These soldiers were trained in carrying shields in the front and wielding their spears behind them

A vivid example of his military might was his victory over Ur in battle, he conquered the city and destroyed its wall. He conquered Eninmar, destroyed its walls, and conquered its district and Lagash as far as the sea.

Sargon's cultural assimilation

Sargon used the element of cultural assimilation by leaving the Sumerian religion in place but made Akkadian the official language of all Mesopotamia.

He succeeded in lowering physical and linguistic barriers and unifying his realm, he promoted commerce both within Mesopotamia and well beyond.
