The distance between the points (-2, -8) and (1,-4).  Whole number or a fully simplified radical expression is d=\sqrt{17}$

The formula may be used to determine the separation between two places.

d=\sqrt{(x 1-x 2)^2+\left(y 1-y^2\right)^2}

where

(x1 , y1) and (x2 , y2) are the points

From the question the points are

(-2,-8) and (1,4)

The distance between them is

&d=\sqrt{(-2+1)^2+(-8-(-4))^2} \\

Apply rule -(-a)=a

$$d=\sqrt{(-2+1)^2+(-8+4)^2}$$

$$(-2+1)^2=1$$

$$(-8+4)^2=4^2$$

$$d=\sqrt{1+4^2}$$

$$\begin{aligned}&4^2=16 \\&d=\sqrt{1+16}\end{aligned}$$

Add the numbers:

1+16=17$ \\d=\sqrt{17}$

Mathematical statements are called expressions if they have at least two words that are related by an operator and contain either numbers, variables, or both.

Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are all possible mathematical operations. As an illustration, the phrase x + y is one where x and y are terms with an addition operator in between. There are two sorts of expressions in mathematics: numerical expressions, which only contain numbers, and algebraic expressions, which also include variables.

10. Seven equally qualified students apply for a scholarship, but only 5 scholarships of equal value can be given:
jeka94

Answer:

(a) 21

(b)2520

Step-by-step explanation:

(a)

Using combination formula, nCr where n is the total sample and r is the limitation hence 7 combination 5.

[tex}7C5=\frac {7*6*5*4*3}{5*4*3*2*1}=\frac {2520}{120}=21[/tex]

(b)

If the scholarships are not equal

The number of ways to select the 5 students from 7  we use permutation formula hence

7P5 = 7*6*5*4*3 = 2520
