The ways that trade impacted the development of West African Kingdoms included:

 • A) West Africa had rich resources of gold and salt.
 • B) West African rulers taxed all trade caravans crossing their territories.
 • C) The Islamic faith was introduced to the region by Arab traders.

How did trade lead to development in Western Africa?

Western African empires such as the Songhai, Mali and the empire of Ghana had access to resources such as gold and salt.

These resources and others like them, were traded across the Sahara and so would come in trade caravans that passed these empires thus allowing them to tax the caravans.
