Genetic drift works mainly in small populations and can occur in two ways: Bottleneck Effect: It happens when the population size is drastically reduced in one generation. This decrease can occur due to natural events such as droughts, earthquakes and floods.

What is a genetic bottleneck?

The bottleneck effect is a drastic reduction in population size. Occurs when the population size is reduced by at least one generation. As a result of the bottleneck effect, genetic variation is reduced.

A population bottleneck occurs when the size of a population is reduced by at least one generation. Genetics derived from age faster to reduce genetics in small populations, however, going through a “bottleneck” can greatly reduce it, even if the bottleneck will not last for many decades.
