The reason why the hard work and dedication pay off was the universal theme of the passage was  because the farmer sons  was after the hidden treasure which unknowing to them the father what  them to learn a lesson from what he told them which is with handwork and dedication a person can achieve their goals. The  story of the Wolf and the Crane thought us the same lesson which is Hard work and dedication pay off.
