Trevor finds that he can best remember information if he creates flashcards and quizzes himself. This is called the <u>testing </u>effect.
Testing effect is also called retrieval practice. It is based on the idea that long-term memory can be created when the learner engages in consistent testing of his knowledge during the learning period.
The information tends to stick in the mind due to the practice of retrieving information from memory.
One application of this is the shift in purpose of tests merely as an assessment tool, to one of a teaching aid. This additionally promotes active learning and therefore retention of knowledge.
