The thalamic nucleus, which is present in each sensory system, receives sensory impulses and sends them to the corresponding main cortical region. The amygdala is interconnected with many other brain areas, allowing it to communicate with areas that process "higher" cognitive information and systems that control "lower" processes (including fear, anger, and fear-related behaviors)
