Chlorophyll chromatography uses paper chromatography to separate photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll, carotene, and xanthophyll according to their solubility in the solvent and size.

Pigment-like molecules are employed during photosynthesis to absorb light energy because of the wavelength and color they reflect. A method known as paper chromatography makes it simple to distinguish between and identify the four major pigments of green plants. Your filter paper strip is a chromatogram. The various pigments are displayed in the chromatogram. Carotene appears bright yellow, chlorophyll an is blue-green, chlorophyll b is yellow-green, and xanthophyll is a faint yellow-green. The separation and identification of various plant pigments can be accomplished with the help of paper chromatography.
