x - 3 gallons = 4.5 (y - 2 gallons)

x - 3 = 4.5(y - 2)

x - 3 = 4.5y - 9

x = 4.5y - 6

substituting the value of x

2y = 4.5y - 6

4.5y - 2y = 6

2.5y = 6

y = 2.4 gallons
