Savant syndrome is a rare but remarkable phenomenon in which people with severe mental impairments, such as autistic disorder, have a "island of genius" that contrasts sharply and oddly with their overall handicap.
Up to one in ten people with autism show these extraordinary skills to varied degrees, while savant syndrome can also be present in people with other developmental disorders or other diseases or injuries of the central nervous system. Whatever the specific savant skill, it is usually associated with an enormous memory.
The phenomenology of savant abilities, its historical development, and its ramifications for both current and future research are briefly reviewed in this work.
