when behavior is observed completely disappears as a result of the reinforcement strategy being used. Whenever the reinforcement that created a behavior is eliminated, an extinction burst occurs. At first, the observed behavior will grow. The person is making an attempt to increase behaviors in order to increase the motivational operant. The behavior gradually reduced until it was extinct after the eruption. An illustration of this is a vending machine that, after you pay and press the button, does not deliver a soda. From previous experience, the soda is delivered by inserting money and pressing the button. There is a long history of rewarding this behavior.
