Janet has heard several news reports about assaults near her workplace. now, when she leaves work late and is walking to her car alone, everyone she passes seems to look dangerous. This demonstrates Selective Perception.
Selective perception can refer to a variety of psychological cognitive biases that have to do with how expectations influence perception. People often fail to recognize their own biases, but they are quick to recognize (and even overestimate) the operation of prejudice in other people's judgment. A variety of cognitive, perceptual, and motivational biases impair human judgment and decision making.
Perceptual vigilance, which is referred to as the low level of selective perception, is the process by which an individual observes and identifies the stimuli that may be, to some extent, meaningful to him. Contrarily, perceptual defense refers to an individual's attempt to erect a wall between himself and the stimuli in order to shield himself from being aware of it.
