Sharon has fallen prey to belief perseverance

Because Sharon ignored the news in this instance and instead stuck to her beliefs, she was unaware that the news was satirical.

What is belief perseverance?

A belief must be held upon despite new facts that vehemently contradicts it. The boomerang effect is a phenomena whereby attempts to refute such ideas may potentially serve to reinforce them.

Journalist Cari Romm, for instance, explains a study on vaccination reluctance in a story from The Atlantic published in 2014. The participants in the study voiced their worries about the adverse consequences of flu vaccines. They were even less willing to take them after being assured that the immunization was absolutely safe. Their preexisting mistrust of the vaccination was strengthened by this new information, which made them distrust it even more.

There are three different types of backfire effects: worldview backfire effect, overkill backfire effect, and familiarity backfire effect. The familiarity backfire effect results from making falsehoods more widely known. Cook & Lewandowsky (2011) list several methods for dispelling erroneous information, including highlighting the essential facts rather than the myth, informing readers in advance that the material is untrue, and offering backup explanations to fill in the gaps left by dispelling the false information. The backfire effects, however, are not as likely as previously believed, according to more recent studies.
