Explanation:

The participants in Milgram's famous experiment were deceived and possibly psychologically harmed, which made the experiment's methodology be seen as controversial. Milgram recruited a group of male adults to administer an electric shock to a person who was strapped to a chair every time that person made a mistake. The participant was not aware that the shocks weren't real and that the person sitting in the chair was a confederate of Milgram's. The participants were to stay in a different room with an actor who played an experimenter, whose job was solely to give them orders such as "You must continue". The majority of participants ended up obeying the experimenter, administering shocks with increased intensity to the point that the person in the chair would be killed. They left the experiment truly believing they had killed somebody. That is why the experiment was controversial.
