<span>The Battle being described is the Battle of Gettysburg. It was the turning point in the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee was marching his troops toward the Susquehanna River Pennsylvania. He planned to launch a massive attack on the North that would crush their spirit. On July 1st, 1863 he crossed the Potomac and engaged in battle with General George G. Meade in the largest battle of the Civil War with 165,000 soldiers fighting on the field of battle. They fought near the town of Gettysburg for three days. The Battle ended on July 3rd with Pickett's charge. In November of 1963, Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address, dedicating the Gettysburg Soldiers Cemetery. The losses of this battle were too much for the Confederate army and General Lee, realizing they couldn't recover, surrendered in Appomattox to General Ulysses S. Grant 21 months later.</span>
