They can use enzymes to convert reactive oxygen species to non-harmful molecules. They can survive in environments where aerobic organisms quickly consume available oxygen.

Toxicity from Oxygen Obligate anaerobes, which exist only in the absence of oxygen, lack the defense's that allow aerobic life to occur and thus cannot survive in air. The singlet oxygen molecule that has been excited is extremely reactive. In order for cells to survive in the presence of oxygen, superoxide must be removed.

Obligate anaerobes are unable to tolerate oxygen because their metabolic schemes are based on enzymes that react with oxidants. They are toxic things.
