The U.S.'s victory in World War II was historic. The United States engaged in a two-front war in both the Pacific and European theaters.
The American triumph at Midway in the Pacific theater saw them sink four Japanese carriers along with the best fighter pilots from that country. The Japanese were then stopped from setting up an airport and staging ground for the invasion of Australia by America's capture and retention of Henderson Field in the Solomon Islands. Americans then began island-hopping ever-closer to Japan. No other country was able to overcome Japan except for the American will.
In the European theater, the British attacked at night, impeding the German war effort, while the Americans started their daytime bombing assaults on the German industrial heartland in 1942. The German war machine was further hampered by American bombing strikes on Romanian oilfields, which reduced German fuel output. In the meanwhile, the US sent supplies to the Russian, British, and French soldiers that were free. During World War II, America/Britain conducted a number of campaigns in Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France.
The number of lives lost during a conflict is not a measure of its success.
Stalin was unconcerned with the loss of life, despite the fact that many Russians fought valiantly, suffered millions of casualties, and significantly contributed to the defeat of the Germans. The Russians bombarded the Germans with waves upon waves of men, often without even arming them. There were perhaps 10 to 15 Russians slain for every German, according to estimates. Stalin used death threats to pressure his generals into fighting one another. In the last days, two Russian generals risked countless lives by driving on Berlin in an effort to win Stalin's praise. He gave instructions that no Allied soldier would fight for German land that would be under soviet rule after World War II and rejected ideas that he believed to be too hazardous and may cost a considerable number of lives.
