Answer: d. white blood cells

Explanation:

White blood cells are the cells produced by the bone marrow cells of the animal body. These cells produce antibodies in the bodies on invasion of the body by a foreign antigen. These antibodies fight against these antigens of disease causing pathogens like bacteria, virus and fungi. Certain white cells are called as phagocytes as they engulf the foreign large particles or antigens.

Explain how the Meselson-Stahl experiment with "heavy" nitrogen showed that DNA replication is semiconservative.
Veseljchak [2.6K]

Answer:

1. Bacteria where grow in a medium composed of heavy nitrogen. After several generations the bacteria DNA was composed of heavy nitrogen (heavy nitrogen is an isotope of nitrogen).

2. After several generations had passed, the bacteria were transferred to a nitrogen light medium.

3. As soon as the bacteria were transferred the bacteria DNA was isolated after the first and second generation through centrifugation.

4. Results: after 2 generations half of the DNA was intermediate and half was light; there was not heavy-only DNA. The conclusion was that the new DNA is formed by an "old" strand and a "new" strand producing an intermediate weight.

The most likely outcome is that the heavy metal pollutants will BIOACCUMULATE in the oysters. Bioaccumulation refers to the gradual accumulation of substances in living things.

Heavy metals include lead, cobalt, nickel, cadmium and mercury. These metals are highly toxic, thereby their bioaccumulation is dangerous for marine ecosystems and human health.

In this case, it is expected that heavy metals bioaccumulate in the internal organs of the oysters. Subsequently, these pollutants will also bioaccumulate in humans that eat contaminated oysters.

Heavy metals are highly toxic even at low concentrations, thereby their bioaccumulation is harmful to human health.

In humans, for example, it has been shown that the bioaccumulation of heavy metals affects the formation of blood cells.

Question 14 of 25
Archy [21]

The process likely to be occurring in the plant's roots will be nitrogen fixation.

What is nitrogen fixation?

It is a process whereby atmospheric nitrogen is converted to usable forms of nitrogen in the soil.

Nitrogen fixation takes place in the root nodules of leguminous plants in association with some symbiotic bacteria.

Thus, the only process that could be happening in the plant's root is nitrogen fixation.
