According to oral tradition, the Caddo tribe originated in northern Louisiana. Their culture developed in Arkansas and Louisiana and from there, it spread south and west. The tribe was led by the hereditary leader (kahdi) and the council of elders (kanakha); also, there were female leaders. There were elected military leaders (amahoya).
