6/8,9/12,12/16..etc. have same values as 3/4 as u multiply numerator and denominator  with common factors(2,3,4...respectively.)

Then you add the 8.5% to the $1,750 and you get $1,898.75.  That will be the total amount of money he will spend. So you will have to subtract $1,898.75 from $3,189.38 and the amount is $1,290.63.
