Read these sentences from the excerpt: An independent pipeline attempted to bring it to Pittsburgh, but to reach the works the p

ipeline must run under a branch of the Pennsylvania railroad. It refused to permit this, and for months the oil from the line was hauled in wagons from the point where it had been held up, over the railroad track, and there re-piped and carried to Pittsburgh. How does the language in these two sentences affect their tone?
1) The phrase "hauled in wagons" conveys an admiring tone.

2) The phrase "under a branch of the Pennsylvania railroad" conveys a scientific tone.

3) The words "re-piped" and "carried" convey an old-fashioned tone.

4) The words "refused to" and "held up" convey a disapproving tone.

Answer:

The language in these two sentences affects their tone because the words "refused to" and "held up" convey a disapproving tone.

Explanation:

The excerpt mentions in its lines that the project itself was not approved, and it gives the information in that mood, besides the words "refuse to" and "held up" are denial verbs that reinforce the same tone of disapproval in the sentences, the other options are not correct because they do not have any supporting elements so say they express a different tone.

4) The words "refused to" and "held up" convey a disapproving tone.

I believe this would be correct. There is no admiration ot old-fashioned tones in the passage. 2 is an unlikely tone

What figurative language is used in the lady or the tiger
Taya2010 [7]

Answer:

Figurative language is any kind of language or figure of speech that does not employ the literal meaning. Certainly, author Frank R. Stockton uses figurative language in his narrative.

Examples of figurative language are in italics:

In the exposition, Stockton employs exaggeration and irony in his description of the kingdom and the semi-barbaric king, a man of "exuberant fancy and of an authority so irresistible that, at his will, he turned his varied fancies into facts."

The king's "exuberant fancy" is a figure of speech for his ideas about how to punish those who commit crimes. His authority is only "irresistible" because he is king and he cruelly enforces his rules. He has an "exuberant fancy" that he exercises: his public arena in which there are exhibitions of man against beast. These exhibitions are used as part of his impartial and incorruptible chance." This "chance" involves the choice that the accused makes between one door of the arena or another. One of the doors holds a deadly lion and the other one holds a maiden that the accused marries (whether he is already married or not).

Clearly, the use of figurative language in the story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" lends a greater impact upon the characterization of the "semi-barbaric" king and princess, as well as having an interesting influence upon the interpretation of the story.

The twin getting a C is using a fixed mindset. Just because your twin gets a better grade does not make you dumber it means you may need a different approach at what you are doing.
