After the Civil War, Southern state legislatures attempted to restrict the rights of formerly enslaved persons by "passing Black Codes" which segregated blacks from whites.

Reconstruction succeeded in its goals of restoring the Union and helping to "<span>d. repair the war-torn South" although many would agree that Reconstruction failed because discrimination still existed. </span>
Extreme pro-slavery elements objected to it because it provided a precedent by which Congress had power to regulate slavery. Abolitionists opposed it because it allowed slavery to continue to spread in some of the areas.
Generally speaking, World War II created "<span>c. a combination of prosperity and scarcity" on the homefront, since it boosted employment and GDP but there was still war rationing. </span>
