The main factors that influence a country's power to control territory are military, capital and the level of industrialization. A rich country with a highly capable military could be said to be high in hard power. The economic provides the ability to obtain it, maintain it and hard power can bolster it. Soft power denotes the ability to explicitly or implicitly influence other states via cultural influence, sometimes economic influence.

The Arizona Sonora border was established as a result of the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. The land gets more and more arid as one travels west, and the western third of the border is essentially devoid of human habitation. It is this stretch of the border, once a major road to the Colorado River, that has earned and kept the title El Camino del Diablo, "The Devil's Highway."</span>
