From second equation y = 8 - x so
7x + 2(8 - x) = -14
5x = -14 - 16 = -30
x = -6
and y = 8 - -6 = 14
Answer x=-6,y=14
If you're adding a positive, the negative value would decrease. If you're adding a negative, the negative value will increase. Hope this helps.
