The Upanishads are a collection of religious and philosophical texts, written in India probably between 800 BCE and 500 BCE. The name derives from Upa (near) and shad (to sit), meaning to "sit close by." The name refers to the action of sitting at the feet of an illuminated teacher to engage in a session of instruction.

The vast majority of the Upanishads are anonymous, but some are the exception to this rule. Among those authors that are mentioned, we can find sages such as Yajnavalkya, Uddalaka Aruni, Shvetaketu, Shandilya, Aitareya, Balaki, Pippalada, and Sanatkumara.
