The name derives from <em>Upa</em> (near) and <em>shad </em>(to sit), meaning to "sit close by." The name refers to the action of sitting at the feet of an illuminated teacher to engage in a session of instruction.

The vast majority of the Upanishads are anonymous, but some are the exception to this rule. Among those authors that are mentioned, we can find sages such as <em>Yajnavalkya, Uddalaka Aruni, Shvetaketu, Shandilya, Aitareya, Balaki, Pippalada, </em>and <em>Sanatkumara</em>.
