The answer is object permanence.

Further Explanation:

Object permanence is referred to as knowing that a particular ‘object’ still exists, even it is ‘hidden’. Object permanence requires an individual’s ability to make a mental representation of the object.

If an individual places a toy behind the curtain, a child who has achieved “object permanence” knows that the toy is there so he can actively tries to seek it. At the beginning of the sensorimotor stage, the child behaves in a way that the toy had simply disappeared.

The attainment of “Object Permanence” signals the transition from “the sensorimotor stage” to the “preoperational stage” of development. The main aim of Piaget (1963) was to investigate that at what age the child acquires object permanence. He found that infants searched for the toys when he/she is around 8 months old.

The answer is object permanence.

Object permanence is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen anymore. This is a fundamental concept studied in the field of developmental psychology. The term was coined by Jean Piaget. Jean Piaget’s theory is that children of about eight or nine months of age develop awareness/the idea that objects continue to exist even when one cannot see them. Before this stage, as far as the infant is concerned, items that are not within eyesight range do not exist.
