I pulled this off the internet. Maybe this can help.

At divergent plate boundaries, two lithospheric plates move apart, and new plate (and crust) are created at the boundary. The new crust is created volcanically. This process always produces ocean crust and thus oceanic plate. Thus divergent boundaries ultimately become mid-ocean ridges.

Why do volcanoes occur at the edges of plates?
notka56 [123]

Answer: Most of the world's volcanoes are found around the edges of tectonic plates, both on land and in the oceans. On land, volcanoes form when one tectonic plate moves under another. Usually a thin, heavy oceanic plate subducts, or moves under, a thicker continental plate.
