At divergent<span> plate boundaries, two </span>lithospheric<span> plates move apart, and new plate (and crust) are created at the boundary. The new crust is created volcanically. This process always produces ocean crust and thus </span>oceanic<span> plate. Thus </span>divergent <span>boundaries ultimately become mid-ocean ridges.</span>
