The most significant factor that has resulted in an unequal society in Johannesburg, South Africa is it's history of segregation and apartheid. Practically almost all the resources and wealth of South Africa in general and Johannesburg in particular was held by the White community until 1994 during the apartheid era. Even after the the prohibition of the apartheid, most of the steps taken by government in order to help the poorer community have not been very successful primarily because the economy growth has remained very slow for most part post Apartheid. This has created a great deal of segregation to this date and the effect is mostly pronounced in Johannesburg, which is more of a business and financial center in comparison to other similar South African cities which have other local businesses and tourism. More than 90% of the poorer community of Johannesburg lives in extremely economically difficult situation and at the same time, there are some segregated wealthy community living in better off areas such as Sandton which is an affluent area within the metro of South Africa.
