The plankton after dying gets settled at the bottom of the oceans and the seas and due to gathering of the layers of sediments it gets compressed for over millions of years and results in the generation of crude oil. This occurs because of high pressure and heat.  

This extreme heat and pressure work as the source of energy that results in the compression of small creatures of the sea and leads to the production of crude oil and natural gas.
