Marjorie is trying to determine the identity of an unknown substance. After running tests, she determines that the substance is

insoluble in CCl4 with a density of about 2.2 g/mL. Substance Density Boiling Point Solubility (in water) Solubility (in CCl4) NaCl 2.165 g/mL 1413°C soluble insoluble C10H8 1.14 g/mL 255°C insoluble soluble FeCl3 2.898 g/mL 315°C soluble insoluble SiO2 2.634 g/mL 2590°C insoluble insoluble Using the data above, which of the following substances is most likely Marjorie's unknown? A. FeCl3 B. NaCl C. SiO2 D. C10H8

Answer:
The substance is most likely NaCl.

Explanation:
                    Solubility:
As stated in statement the substance is insoluble in CCl₄ (Tetrachloromethane), it shows that the substance is polar in nature. In given options only C₁₀H₈ is soluble in CCl₄ because both are non polar in nature and like dissolves like. Hence, C₁₀H₈ is rejected.

                    Density:
Now, we are left with three options. NaCl, FeCl₃ and SiO₂. The student found that the density of substance is 2.20 g.mL⁻¹. Which is very close to the density of NaCl (i.e. 2.165 g.mL⁻¹). Therefore, most probably the substance the student is dealing with is Sodium Chloride.

How can you improve the percent yield of copper in this lab? Check all possible strategies that will help you do so.
Paladinen [302]

Measure reactants precisely.

Stir to help the reaction take place.

Wait patiently until the reaction completes.

Make sure to recover as much copper as possible.

Explanation:

Anything that increases the rate of this reaction will improve the yield of copper production.

The rate of reaction is usually a factor of how the concentration of reactants and products changes with time.

Some of the factors that affects the rate of a reaction are:

  • Nature of reactants
  • concentration or pressure if gases
  • temperature
  • presence of catalysts
  • degree of mixing

In this reaction:

  • to ensure we have the maximum amount of copper produced, measure out the exact/accurate amount of reactants stated
  • make sure you stir the reactants to ensure they mix and combine.
  • ensure you are not too much in haste. Wait for the reaction to go into completion.
  • recover as much copper as possible

finlep [7]

Answer:

Explanation:

The nitrates of Bi,Sn and Cd is ruled out because their sulfides are insoluble in acidic medium.

Nitrates of Ni or Co may be present because their sulfides are insoluble in basic medium. The presence of other nitrates are ruled out.

As the pressure of a system changes, boiling points can change in what direction?
Oksanka [162]

Answer:

If the pressure of the system increases then the boiling point will increase.

If the pressure of the system decreases then the boiling point will decrease. If there is no change in pressure then the boiling point will remain constant.
