Casey is reading a book for a book report. At 3:30 P.M., he started reading where he had left off the day before. At 5:30 P.M. h

e was on page 160. At 8:00 P.M. he was on page 280. If reading the book is modeled by a linear function, what page did Casey start on at 3:30 P.M.?

At 3.30 pm he started reading where he left off.

At 5.30 pm he is at page 160

At 8.00 pm he is at page 280

Between 5.30 pm and 8.00 pm he has covered  = 280 - 160 = 120 pages

That is in between (8.00 - 5.30) = 2 hours 30 minutes = 2 and 1/2 hours

= 2.5 hours

Therefore he covered 120 pages in 2.5 hours, this would be used to set up the linear function.

Between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm is (5.30 - 3.30) = 2 hours

We need to find how many pages can be covered in 2 hours.

In 2.5 hours      120 pages were covered.

In 1 hour      =    120 / 2.5 =  48 pages.

In 2 hours    =    48 * 2 = 96 pages.

If he went at the same rate, that means at 2 hours before 5.30 which is the 3.30, he would have covered 96 pages

Page number =  160 - 96 = 64,  Since he was at 160 at 5.30

So he started at page 64 at 3:30 pm

Dave won a hot dog eating contest by eating 18 hot dogs in 10 minutes. He ate two more than twice the amount of the runner-up. W
IrinaVladis [17]

Answer:

The correct anser is option

B. 2x + 2 = 18

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the number of hot dogs eaten by the runner up be represented by x

If Dave ate 2 more than twice x, this means that the number eaten by him = 2x + 2

Since the total number of hot dogs eaten by Dave is 18

Therefore, the equation will be

2x + 2 = 18

So the number of hot dogs eaten by the runner-up is determined by solving for x

2x= 18-2

2× = 16

x = 16/2

x = 8

The runner up are 8

While Dave are

2×8 + 2 = 18.

After constructing a relative frequency distribution summarizing IQ scores of college students, what should be the sum of the re
saul85 [17]

Answer:

  • <u>Option</u><u> </u><u><em>A</em></u><em>. If percentages are used, the sum should be a 100%. If proportions are used, the sum should be 1.</em>

Explanation:

The <em>relative frequency</em> can be measured as a ratio (proportion) or as a percentage.

As a ratio, the relative frequency is the number of times that the desired outcome is observed (either theoretically or experimentally) divided by the total number of  possible outcomes (theoretically) or  observed (experimentally).

As a<em> percentage</em>, the relative frequency is the ratio multiplied by 100.

This shows it mathematically:

  • relative frequency of event 1 = frequency of event 1 / number of events

  • relative frequency of event 2 = frequency of event 2/number of events

  • relative frequency of event n = freqquency of event n/number of events

  • Total relative frequency = sum of of relative frequencies

                                       = sum of all (n) frequencies / number of events =

                                       = number of events / number of events = 1

As a percentage, total relative frequency = 1 × 100 = 100
