If the population is separated long enough, this means that random sampling in mating and reproduction, that occurred in the initial population has been restricted. The two population will, therefore, adapt to their local environments and become reproductively isolated with time. After long periods of time, the two lizards population will have different alleles and will not be able to mate and produce viable offsprings hence will have speciated.
