The nearest permanent settlement is Alert in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. The permanent population there however is only 62.  There are more people residing in Alert at any given time, but they are there temporarily because they man weather stations and other government and military posts in Alert.  It is 508 miles from the North Pole.  The North Pole is located in the center of the Arctic Ocean and it is covered with shifting pieces of ice.
