Carbon dioxide enters the cell by the process of diffusion. The gases diffuse in and out of the plant tissue through the small openings on the surface of the leaves. These openings are called stomata.

If stomata remain closed then the diffusion of gases will cease . As a result photosynthesis will stop due to lack of raw material. Soon the plant will use up the reserve food and starve to death.
