The British attempted to impact the economy of the colonies by closing the ports and harbors to American ships through the Boston Port Act passed by The Great Britain  Parliament in 1774. It was designed to punish Boston residents for the Boston Tea Party having destroyed the tea and to make them pay the East India Company for the losses and pay the king for lost taxes.
