Answer:

A real solution (in agreement with statement <em>d</em> in your list of answer options)

Step-by-step explanation:

Recall that the expression b^2-4ac  is what is called the "discriminant" of a quadratic equation of the form: a\,x^2+b\,x+c=0

and such is because, the possible solutions for the unknown x" of such equation are given by the <em>quadratic formula</em>:

x=\frac{-b+-\sqrt{b^2-4ac} }{2a}

and if you notice, inside the square-root symbol you find exactly the expression b^2-4ac

This is called the discriminant because it allows us to discriminate, discern how many and the type of solutions the equation can have.

Notice that if this discriminant is zero, the expression inside the square root becomes zero, and square root of zero is zero. That means that the quadratic formula will render not two, but a solution which is real:

The real number that derives from making the quotient of the real numbers:

\frac{-b}{2a}

A party rental company has chairs and tables for rent. The total cost to rent 4 chairs and 8 tables is $89 . The total cost to r
puteri [66]
Let C = cost to rent each chairLet T = cost to rent each table

 4C + 8T = 73
2C + 3T = 28
Multiply the 2nd equation by (-2) and then add the equations together

  4C + 8T = 73
-4C - 6T = -56
 2T = 17T = 17/2 = 8.5

 Plug this in to the 1st equation to solve for C
 4C + 8(17/2) = 73
4C + 68 = 73
4C = 5C = 5/4 = 1.25
 So the cost to rent each chair is $1.25 and the cost to rent each table is $8.50

Using the Pythagorean Theorem, find the length of a leg of a right triangle if the other leg is 8 feet long and the hypotenuse i
iren [92.7K]
The <span>Pythagorean Theorem tells us that a^{2}+b^{2}=c^{2} where c is the </span><span>hypotenuse and a and b are the other two sides. To solve for one of the shorter sides we need to rearrange:

b=\sqrt{c^{2}-a^{2}}

We can then substitute known values, and solve:
</span>b=\sqrt{10^{2}-8^{2}}
b=\sqrt{100-64}
b=\sqrt{36}
b=6 feet

Andrew is buying three different colors of tiles for his kitchen floor. he is buying 50 more purple tiles than black tiles, and
lorasvet [3.4K]
- Key -

Black tiles = x
Purple tiles = x+50
Yellow tiles = 5x

-

Total = x + x+50 + 5x = 400
⇒ 7x + 50 = 400
⇒ 7x = 400-50 = 350
⇒ x = 350/7
⇒ x = 50

Black tiles = 50
Purple tiles = 50+50 = 100
Yellow tiles = 5 x 50 = 250
