The Theory of Motion Reduction was created by Clarke Hull. According to this theory, biological deprivation creates needs. These needs trigger impulses that motivate behavior. The resulting behavior is directed toward a goal, since achieving these goals helps the body survive.

For example, basic needs, such as hunger and thirst, cause organisms to seek satisfaction for those eating and drinking needs. These impulses or needs are then temporarily reduced.  It is this impulse reduction that serves as reinforcement for behavior.
